The most recognisable dinosaur silhouette in the world. Stegosaurus carried 17 diamond-shaped plates along its back and four lethal tail spikes — the 'thagomizer' — capable of driving through bone.

Name Meaning (Etymology)
Stegosaurus means 'roof lizard' from Greek stegos (roof) and sauros (lizard). Marsh initially thought the plates lay flat over the back like roof shingles. Stenops means 'narrow face'.

How it lived

Stegosaurus lived in the open floodplains and woodlands of what is now western North America, approximately 155–150 million years ago. It was a slow, low-browsing herbivore that spent most of its day eating continuously to meet its enormous caloric requirements. The 17 large diamond-shaped plates running along its back were not armour — they stood upright and were richly supplied with blood vessels. Current evidence strongly suggests they were used as thermal regulators: the animal could orient itself to catch or avoid sunlight, warming or cooling the blood flowing through the plates. Stegosaurus had the smallest brain relative to body size of any dinosaur known.

What it ate

Stegosaurus fed on low-growing ferns, mosses, cycads, and early flowering plants. Its tiny head contained small, leaf-shaped teeth set far back in the jaw — suggesting it cropped plants with its toothless beak, then used its teeth for minimal processing before swallowing. Unlike most large herbivores, it couldn't chew efficiently. It relied on a large fermentation chamber in its gut to break down tough plant material.

How long it lived

Stegosaurus was a sturdy herbivore with a reasonable defensive arsenal. Its four tail spikes — each up to 90 cm long — provided genuine protection against the apex predators of its time, particularly Allosaurus. Adults reaching full size had few serious natural threats. Fossil evidence suggests a lifespan of 30–40 years, with most natural deaths resulting from old age, disease, and dental wear.

What Stegosaurus actually looked likeStegosaurus

Stegosaurus had one of the most distinctive body plans of any dinosaur. The arched body with high hips and low shoulders created the characteristic 'rooftop' profile. The 17 plates alternated in two rows and were made of bone covered in skin richly supplied with blood vessels — not attached to the skeleton but embedded in skin, like a dorsal fin. The tail carried four lethal 90cm spikes arranged in two pairs.

What did Stegosaurus sound like?Stegosaurus

The sounds of Stegosaurus are still a matter of active scientific research. Its small head and limited vocal anatomy suggest relatively simple vocalisations — possibly low hissing or bellowing sounds for basic communication. Its blood-flushed plates may have also served as visual signals, reducing the need for complex vocalisation.

Trampling Risk

At 5 tonnes, Stegosaurus's body weight alone makes any encounter potentially lethal — it doesn't need to attack deliberately. A Stegosaurus simply turning around or taking a step backward could crush a human.

Extinction

Stegosaurus disappeared approximately 150 million years ago at the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary — long before the famous asteroid impact. Climate shifts, changing vegetation, and competition from new herbivore lineages most likely caused their gradual decline. By the time T-Rex evolved 80 million years later, Stegosaurus had been extinct for longer than the entire Age of Mammals.
